Empathic interaction with synthetic characters: the importance of similarity

چکیده

Empathic interaction with synthetic characters enables users to build and maintain an emotional involvement that can result in stimulating novel interactions. Many factors impact on empathic interaction; here we focus on the role of ‘similarity’ in developing empathic relations. Evidence suggests that if a character is perceived as being similar to the user in appearance and behaviour, then greater empathic relations will emerge. To investigate this, 345 children aged 10-11 years interacted with FearNot (Fun with Empathic Agents to Reach Novel Outcomes in Teaching), a virtual world populated by synthetic characters involved in bullying scenarios. Children completed an Agent Evaluation Questionnaire, which enquired about perceptions of similarity and empathy with the characters. Results indicated that if children perceived that they were similar to the synthetic characters, greater empathy and liking was expressed. The implications for future design of synthetic characters are considered.

The Importance of Similarity in Empathic Interaction

Empathy has been defined as, “An observer reacting emotionally because he perceives that another is experiencing or about to experience an emotion” (Stotland, Mathews, Sherman, Hannson, & Richardson, 1978). Synthetic characters (computer generated semi-autonomous agents corporeally embodied using multimedia and/or robotics, see Figure 1) are becoming increasingly widespread as a way to establis...

Achieving Empathic Engagement Through Affective Interaction with Synthetic Characters

This paper considers affective interactions to achieve empathic engagement with synthetic characters in virtual learning environments, in order to support and induce the expression of empathy in children. The paper presents FearNot!, a school based virtual learning environment, populated by synthetic characters used for personal, social and health education, specifically bullying issues in scho...

Using Theory of Mind Methods to Investigate Empathic engagement with Synthetic Characters

This paper is concerned with the simulation of human-like capabilities in synthetic characters within the domain of Personal and Social Education. Our aim was to achieve socially meaningful and engaging interactions with children in the 8-12 age group to enable an exploration of bullying and coping strategies. In this paper, we consider the engagement between the interacting partners, focusing ...

Designing Empathic Agents: Adults vs. Kids

An evaluation study of a Virtual Learning Environment populated by synthetic characters for children to explore issues surrounding bullying behaviour is presented. This 225 participant evaluation was carried out with three stakeholder groups, (children, teachers and experts) to examine their attitudes and empathic styles about the characters and storyline believability. Results revealed that ch...

Am I bovvered?: Fifteen years of Empathic Agents

In 2001, the EU-funded project VICTEC pioneered the concept of an Empathic Agent. This was reported at AAMAS in 2004 in a well-cited paper ‘Caring for Agents and Agents that Care: Building Empathic Relations with Synthetic Agents’ (Paiva, Dias, Sobral, Aylett, Sobreperez, Woods, Zoll, Hall). It advanced two goals for embodied empathic agents: characters that, by their actions and behaviours, ar...
